Business Bay's dense cluster of commercial towers houses a large population of SMEs, professional services firms, agencies, brokerages and holding companies — most of them small, owner-managed and mainland-licensed.

The businesses here are overwhelmingly service businesses, which means their accounting problems are service-business problems: revenue recognised before it is billed, work in progress that may never be recovered, retainers invoiced ahead of delivery, and a lock-up cycle that quietly finances clients out of the firm's own working capital. See professional services accounting.

The second recurring theme is owner remuneration. Small mainland companies frequently pay their owner a salary set for convenience rather than for value, which under Corporate Tax is a connected person payment deductible only up to market value for services genuinely provided. It is one of the most exposed positions in an owner-managed business and one of the easiest to document properly in advance — see transfer pricing.

Business Bay — frequently asked questions

We invoice retainers in advance. When is that revenue?

As the service is delivered, not when the retainer is invoiced or paid. An advance retainer is a contract liability until the performance obligation is satisfied — for a monthly service retainer that generally means recognising it across the month it covers. Recognising retainers on invoice inflates the billing month, understates the delivery period, and creates a revenue line that swings with your invoicing calendar rather than your actual work.

How much salary can I pay myself from my own company?

Commercially, whatever you like. For Corporate Tax deduction purposes, only the amount that reflects the market value of the services you actually provide to the business. Payments to a connected person — an owner, a director, or a related party of either — are deductible only to that extent, and the burden of supporting the figure sits with the business. An owner drawing far more than a third party would be paid for the equivalent role should expect the excess to be disallowed, and should document the basis before filing rather than after a query.

Do you work with businesses outside your listed locations?

Yes. We act for clients across all seven emirates and in every major free zone; the location pages cover the areas we are asked about most, not the limits of where we work. Cloud accounting makes physical proximity largely irrelevant — what matters is knowledge of the UAE regime and of your sector.

Based in Business Bay?

Tell us the licence type, roughly how many transactions a month and where things stand. We will scope the work and quote a fixed monthly fee.
