What is a tax invoice?

A tax invoice is the document a VAT-registered UAE supplier must issue for a taxable supply, carrying the particulars the VAT legislation prescribes. It is what entitles a registered customer to recover input tax — without a valid one, the credit is not available.

Why it matters to the buyer

Input tax recovery requires a valid tax invoice. A supplier statement, a quotation, a delivery note, a pro-forma or a bank payment confirmation is not a substitute, and a business that pays VAT without collecting the invoice has simply paid 5% more for the thing. On review, missing invoices are one of the most common reasons input tax is disallowed.

Why it matters to the seller

Issuing non-compliant invoices is a compliance failure in itself, and it makes you difficult to buy from — business customers who cannot recover the VAT you charged will notice. A retail till that can only print a basic receipt should have a route to produce a full tax invoice with the customer's TRN on request.
